Srinagar, Oct 31: The Health and Medical Education Department has outlined its plans for healthcare infrastructure in north Kashmir, confirming the upgraded status of Baramulla District Hospital while stating that no Mother and Child Care Hospital is currently sanctioned for Sopore.
The information was provided in a written reply to MLA Sopore, Irshad Rasool Kar. A copy of the document is with The Web Story/The Varmul Post.
According to the reply, the District Hospital in Baramulla has been elevated from a secondary-level institution to a tertiary care provider. This upgrade is a result of the Government of India’s approval for the establishment of a new Medical College in Baramulla under a centrally sponsored scheme. The existing District Hospital will now serve as the associated hospital for this college, significantly enhancing its healthcare services.
Regarding Sopore, the department stated that while no dedicated Mother and Child Care Hospital has been sanctioned, these services are currently being provided in the new Operation Theatre block of the Sub-District Hospital (SDH). Furthermore, the government has plans to improve the facilities at SDH Sopore.
“The facilities and services of SDH Sopore shall be improved as per the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) 2022 norms, keeping in view the workload and patient footfall,” the reply stated. It added that the department will prioritize appropriate upgrades for better patient care once formal approval is granted.
Further, under the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), one Urban Health and Wellness Centre is now approved and functioning in a building within the old campus of SDH Sopore.
