Srinagar, Oct 31 : The Jammu and Kashmir Housing and Urban Development Department has confirmed that a comprehensive, long-awaited water supply scheme for Sopore town is proceeding and now awaits the final green light from a government contract committee.
The update was provided in a written response to Sopore MLA Mr. Irshad Rasool Kar. A copy of the reply, reviewed by The Web Story/The Varmul Post, outlines the status of multiple initiatives aimed at improving water infrastructure in the constituency.
The reply reads, AMRUT 2.0 Scheme for Sopore Town
A major water supply project for Sopore Town,sanctioned under the national AMRUT 2.0 scheme at a cost of ₹73.38 crore, has moved a critical step forward. The department completed the project’s technical and financial evaluation and has tendered it. The proposal is now pending a review by the Contract Committee, whose approval is required for the final award of the work.
As per the reply, The Jal Shakti Department(JSD) is implementing several projects to boost water supply.
The augmentation of the Water Supply Scheme (WSS) for Sidiq Colony and Model Town is underway, funded by ₹5.3568 crore from the UT Capex budget.
During this financial year, water supply is being augmented in several areas, including Badshah Masjid Mohalla in Batapora, Khushal Colony, the inner lanes of Ningli, and Ibraheem Colony under the District Capex budget. The Chekroday Khan area is also being augmented under UT Capex.
To specifically address water scarcity in the tail-end areas of Ningli and Hatisha, a new 200 mm DI shunt line is proposed under the Constituency Development Scheme (CDS) of the Sopore MLA.
Water Tanker Services
For localities with insufficient or no piped water coverage,the department is currently operating three departmental water tankers and one hired private tanker within Sopore Town.
Jal Jeevan Mission Progress
Under the central Jal Jeevan Mission,16 water supply schemes have been initiated for the Sopore constituency. Of these, nine have been successfully completed.
Significant Progress on Sidiq Colony and Model Town WSS Substantial advancements have been reported on the WSS for Sidiq Colony and Model Town.The source work is complete, including the construction of an intake sump and pump house. The distribution network to cover previously unserved areas—Shalimar Colony, Qadriya Mohalla, and Umar Mohalla—has been laid.
The rising main from Stage 1 to the filtration plant at Sidiq Colony is finished and is currently in the testing phase. Meanwhile, the rising main from Stage 1 to Model Town is approximately 90% complete, with only 46 meters of work remaining. This final stretch is pending road cutting clearance in Model Town, for which the department is actively coordinating with the concerned authorities.
While the permanent electrical connection is still under inspection, a temporary connection has been provided to allow for testing of the newly installed systems, the government’s reply confirmed.
