Baramulla, Oct 09 : A 19-district, 344-player hunt for Jammu and Kashmir’s top under-17 football talent began here Thursday, with hosts Baramulla signalling their intent with a 7-0 demolition of Doda in the opening fixture.
The UT-Level Inter-District Provincial Football Championship for Under-17 Boys, organised by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, J&K, under Director General Anuradha Gupta, is being hosted by the department’s Baramulla district unit at St. Joseph’s School Ground.
The tournament was inaugurated by ADDC Baramulla Pranjal Hazarika in the presence of the 2IC, 112 Battalion BSF Baramulla, and St. Joseph’s School Principal Suresh Brittoo.
Hazarika praised the department’s push for grassroots sports and urged the players to compete with discipline and sportsmanship, while Brittoo stressed the role of sport in building leadership and character among students.
The championship will be played on a league basis across five venues.
DYSSO Baramulla Mushtaq Ahmad Pampori welcomed the contingents and reiterated the department’s commitment to giving young athletes competitive platforms to showcase their talent.
