In a welcome step, the Station House Officer Sopore Khalid Fayaz Monday issued a directive to shopkeepers to mark a 500-meter zone around all educational institutions to prohibit the sale of tobacco and related products.
In a video circulating on social media platforms, Fayaz can be seen advising shopkeepers to ensure that the prohibited areas are clearly marked with signage.
The directive is meant to make it easy for people to know where they cannot sell tobacco products and to help the staff of educational institutions identify the prohibited areas.
Fayaz also warned that shopkeepers who violate the directive will face jail time.
The move is aimed at protecting the health and well-being of students and staff at educational institutions in the town.
The sale of tobacco products near schools and colleges has been a growing concern in Kashmir, with many advocating for stricter regulations to protect young people from the dangers of tobacco use.
This new directive in Sopore is a significant step in addressing this issue and promoting public health.
