Srinagar, Sep 09 : The Kashmir Valley witnessed an unprecedented social media frenzy on Wednesday as netizens flooded digital platforms with Artificial Intelligence-generated images evoking the nostalgic charm of 1980s Bollywood, with the trend showing no signs of slowing down.
Since the early hours of the Wednesday, users across the Valley have been posting their retro avatars—complete with vintage hairstyles, bell-bottom trousers, and oversized sunglasses—capturing the essence of the bygone era. The captions, almost identical in phrasing, read “Retro Vibes 1980,” as the trend gained unstoppable momentum.
“This is not just a filter, it is a feeling. The 80s Bollywood era was pure magic the music, the fashion, the larger-than-life romance. We are all reliving that dream today,” said Khan Firdous, a Srinagar-based digital content creator, whose AI portrait drew comparisons to veteran actor Rishi Kapoor.
“We have seen this before—whether it was the black-and-white filter craze or the old-money aesthetic. Kashmir follows trends with full intensity. This one, however, feels more personal because Bollywood has always been an emotion here,” added Khan.
The craze has transcended regional boundaries, with political figures and celebrities joining the bandwagon. Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, shared their retro AI makeovers, drawing amused reactions from followers. Bollywood couple Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra also participated, with fans likening their vintage transformation to iconic pair Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon.
Social media analysts point to a recurring pattern in the Valley. “Kashmir has always been a trend-driven society. From picture reels to video challenges, the moment something catches attention, the entire Valley embraces it collectively. This retro wave is a classic example of that digital herd mentality,” said Shiekh Saleem a senior Journalist.
The trend, which started as a niche experiment, has now become a full-blown internet storm. “I woke up to hundreds of requests from friends and family asking me to generate their retro images. Within hours, my timeline was nothing but 80s Bollywood. It is chaotic, but beautiful chaos,” shared Touseef Wani, a graphic designer from Srinagar.
As the hashtag #RetroVibes1980 continues to dominate trending lists, social media experts predict the wave will sustain for at least another 48 hours.

Notably, this trend coincides with Bollywood’s return to the Valley during the International Film Festival, which began on 7 September and will conclude on Thursday. Over the past three days, filmmakers from both Bollywood and abroad have participated.

The event showcases a diverse range of narratives—from mainstream commercial cinema to independent and documentary works. The festival has also facilitated panel discussions, masterclasses, and networking sessions, providing a platform for emerging local talent to interact with established industry veterans.
