Baramulla, October 24: National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Saturday questioned the independence of the media, alleging that newspapers were being paid to publish particular narratives and that journalists were facing pressure for writing truth.
Addressing a gathering in Baramulla, Dr Abdullah as per The Web Story/The Varmul Post questioned whether the media was reporting the truth and urged journalists to examine what was happening around them.
“Where are they getting this (narrative) from? Because they are being paid to say this,” Abdullah said, alleging that newspapers were receiving money to publish such reports.
Pointing towards journalists present at the gathering, he asked whether the media was writing and showing the truth. He also alleged that journalists were being pressured and could face action for asking questions.
Describing the prevailing situation, Dr Abdullah warned journalists against assuming that they enjoyed complete freedom.
“Do not think that you are free. You have become slaves,” Dr Farooq Abdullah said.
