In a strong rebuttal, Home Minister Amit Shah has refuted claims made by former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah regarding proposed changes to the governance structure of the Union Territory.
Shah stated that Abdullah’s tweet was “misleading and speculative in nature” and that there is “not even an iota of truth” to the claims. He emphasized that the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act of 2019, passed by the Parliament of India, already provides for the notification of transaction of business rules, which were duly notified in 2020.
The Home Minister in a post on X, further asserted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have “wholeheartedly supported the efforts of the Government of India to bring in a democratically elected government through the historic free and fair election process in which the citizens participated enthusiastically.”
Shah’s remarks come in the wake of a tweet by Omar Abdullah, in which the former J&K Chief Minister had claimed that the central government was considering a proposal to “further dilute” the powers of the elected government in the Union Territory.
The Home Minister’s firm denial of any such proposals underscores the government’s commitment to the existing governance framework in Jammu and Kashmir, which was reorganized into a Union Territory after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
