Srinagar, Oct 18: An awareness session on sexual harassment in newsrooms was conducted at the Media Education Research Centre in Central Kashmir’s Srinagar on Friday.

The session aimed to educate students on the challenges faced in newsroom environments and the legal mechanisms available for addressing harassment. It also highlighted the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces for journalists.

Students from the first and third semesters, along with scholars from the department, actively participated in the session. They were given practical insights into newsroom dynamics, empowering them with the knowledge to raise concerns about workplace misconduct.

The session was organized by Azadi leaders Ilhak Ahmad Tantray and Iqra Qayoom Khan, who invited media and legal experts to share their professional experiences and discuss the legal framework around sexual harassment.

Prof. Sabeha Mufti, Head of the Department, stressed the significance of such initiatives, stating that these opportunities allow students to gain hands-on experience. She encouraged students to embrace these learning moments, as they can build confidence and contribute to long-term success in the media industry.

“The experience was eye-opening, especially since it’s the first time a student-led session like this has been organized,” remarked one of the participating students. Scholars and students voiced their appreciation for the session, advocating for more frequent awareness programs to strengthen their understanding of professional ethics and conduct.

In recognition of their contributions, the Head of the Department, along with two senior faculty members, presented tokens of appreciation to the invited experts. The session concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering awareness and action against harassment in media spaces.
