Sopore, August 30, 2025: The Government Degree College for Women, Sopore, in collaboration with the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, today organized a one-day literary program titled “Literary Forum” in memory of the late Mohiuddin Gowhar, one of the prominent poets of Sopore.
The event commenced with the playing of the College Tarana, setting a solemn and dignified tone for the proceedings. The presidium was graced by the Principal of the College, Prof. Subeena Chiloo; renowned poet and Convener of the Kashmiri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, Dr. Shad Ramzan; President of Adbe Markaz Kamraz, Mr. M. Amin Bhat; and Muhtarama Begum Mehr, wife of late Mohiuddin Gowhar.
Prof. Zubair Syed Masoodi welcomed the dignitaries by presenting a bouquet to Mr. Amin Bhat and Begum Mehr, while Prof. Chiloo presented a memento to Dr. Shad Ramzan as a token of gratitude for penning the College Tarana. Dr. Syed Murtaza Geelani, Head of the Department of Education, formally welcomed the guests.
Dr. Shad Ramzan, who authored the College Tarana, delivered an insightful address on Kashmiri language and literature, contextualizing it within the works of Mohiuddin Gowhar. Papers highlighting the life and contributions of the late poet were presented by Hassan Azhar and Showkat Shafi.
A poetry session followed, conducted by Shahnaz Rashid, who recited verses from his book “Door Pahan Dewarun Menz.” The recital received warm appreciation from the audience. On the occasion, Mr. Amin Bhat also shared his reflections on literature and its role in society.
In her presidential address, Principal Prof. Subeena Chiloo expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Sahitya Akademi for selecting the college as the host institution. She spoke extensively about the importance of literature and the need to honor literary luminaries like Gowhar. The session concluded with an open discussion on poetry, which enriched the gathering with creativity and literary spirit.
A formal vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Falak Naz, while Dr. Aadil Mohi Uddin, Head of the Department of Kashmiri, efficiently conducted the proceedings of the event.
Among others who graced the occasion were Mir Tariq, Aejaz Masoodi, G. N. Masoodi, G. M. Mangwalpori, G. M. Tawheedi, Rashid Roshan, Jawahar Ramzan, and several other literary figures.
