UP man illegally crosses Pakistan border to meet lover he met online, arrested

A man from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district has allegedly been arrested in Pakistan for illegally crossing the border to meet a woman he fell in love with after befriending her on Facebook.

The man, identified as 30-year-old Badal Babu, a resident of Nagla Khatkari village, was arrested by Pakistan’s Punjab Police in Mandi Bahauddin city.

Pakistani authorities said Babu confessed during interrogation that he had developed a romantic relationship with the woman on social media and, desperate to meet her in person, entered the country without a valid visa or travel documents.

Babu was arrested on December 27 after he failed to produce any travel documentation. He was booked under Sections 13 and 14 of Pakistan’s Foreigners Act, 1946, and later presented in court.

The court remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. He is scheduled to appear again on January 10, 2025.

Initial investigation revealed that the UP man had previously attempted to cross the India-Pakistan border twice but failed. On his third attempt, he successfully crossed into Pakistan and reached Mandi Bahauddin, where he reportedly met the woman he had been communicating with online.

Authorities are now investigating whether Babu’s illegal entry into Pakistan was purely driven by his romantic involvement or if there were other motivations.

This is not the first time an Indian man has attempted to cross the border to reach Pakistan and meet his partner. In a similar incident in July this year, a man from Uttar Pradesh tried to cross the border to marry a Pakistani woman he had met online.

However, his bid was foiled by the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, who detained him at the Khokhar border outpost in Jammu and Kashmir and handed him over to the police after preliminary investigation. (Agencies)
