Sopore, Oct 25 : Following the circulation of a video purportedly showing substandard sand being used in repairs of the Sopore Bypass Bridge, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) S A Raina has directed the contractor to replace the material, assuring commuters that there would be no compromise on quality.

Speaking to The Web Story/The Varmul Post, ADC Raina said he contacted the contractor after receiving the video and asked him to change the sand being used in the repair work.

“I spoke to the contractor as soon as I received the video and directed him to change the material. There will be no compromise on the quality of material used for the bridge repairs,” he said.

ADC Raina said the administration is monitoring the work and would not allow the use of substandard material. He also criticised what he described as a negligent attitude among officials of the Beacon unit towards the repair work.

“We are monitoring the process closely and hope that the work will yield satisfactory results. Once the bridge is reopened to the public, it will provide relief to commuters,” he said.

The development comes amid the ongoing closure of the bridge, which began at 8 pm on October 22 and is scheduled to continue until October 31. The repairs were taken up following a request from the Officer Commanding of the 56 Road Construction Company (RCC) of the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF).

The closure has necessitated traffic diversions for commuters travelling between Sopore, Kupwara and Srinagar.

According to a traffic advisory issued by the ADC, vehicles travelling from Kupwara and Sopore towards Srinagar have been diverted through Model Town, Sopore Hospital, Iqbal Market, Ghanta Ghar, Shah Dargah, Degree College Crossing, Chankhan and Sangrama.

Those travelling from Srinagar towards Sopore and Kupwara have been advised to use the route via Amargad, Chankhan Bridge, Degree College Crossing, Mandi Crossing and the bypass.
