Handwara, Aug 24: The 7th District Kupwara Yogasana Sports Championship 2026 was held here on Monday at the Indoor Sports Stadium, with over 200 young athletes from across the district participating in various age categories.
The event was organised by the District Kupwara Yogasana Sports Association (DKYSA) in collaboration with Yogasana Bharat and is affiliated with the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara was the chief guest on the occasion, while SSP Handwara, ASP Handwara, SDPO Handwara and SHO Handwara were also present and interacted with the participants.
In a notable highlight, Nahida Nabi, a Kabaddi coach from Sopore, attended the championship to lend her support. Her presence assumed significance as it came amid growing efforts to promote multiple sporting disciplines among the Valley’s youth, particularly young women.
Speaking to The Web Story/Varmul Post, Nabi said, “Sports and fitness go hand in hand. Whether it’s Kabaddi or Yogasana, the goal is to channel the energy of our youth in the right direction. I am happy to see so many young faces here today.”
The championship witnessed keen competition in various Yogasana events, with participants displaying remarkable flexibility, balance and concentration. The winners were felicitated with medals and certificates by the organising committee.
A DKYSA spokesperson said the event was part of a larger initiative to popularise Yogasana as a competitive sport across the district. “We are grateful to the administration and the Sports Council for their continued support. Events like these are crucial to building a sporting culture in Kupwara,” the spokesperson added.
The organisers expressed confidence that the championship would encourage greater participation in the coming years and contribute to the overall physical and mental well-being of the younger generation in the region.
