Srinagar, Mar 14: In response to former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti’s statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that there is currently no stay on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by the Supreme Court.
During an episode of the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash as per The Web Story, Shah addressed the confusion and misconceptions surrounding the CAA. He explained that there are two different aspects – one is to stay any law at the Supreme Court, and the other is to pass a stay order. Shah made it clear that no stay order has been issued by the Supreme Court regarding the CAA, despite various challenges that have been brought forward in the past four years.
Shah also questioned former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti’s who was enjoying the benefits of Article 370 since 1951, never raised any concerns about it. He urged her to explain her stance to the nation.
Shah while hiting back to Mehbooba Mufti emphasized that when it comes to matters of contention, the parameters cannot be changed as there is a Constitution, a system in place, and a functioning judiciary that determines the course of action.
Pertinently, Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday claimed that the notification of the CAA rules was a deliberate attempt by the BJP to incite communal tension.
She urged Muslims not to protest on the streets but to exercise their voting power instead, emphasizing the importance of a constitutional battle and expressing hope in recent judgments by the Supreme Court.
Mufti accused the BJP of using the CAA to divert attention from genuine issues and deemed it discriminatory against Muslims.
