Gujarat Police have resolved the mystery surrounding the missing fingers of an accountant from Surat. The man, identified as Mayur Tarapara, initially claimed that his fingers went missing after he fainted, and later admitted to intentionally chopping them off as he didn’t want to work as a computer operator at his relative’s diamond firm.

The incident came to light on December 8, when Tarapara contacted cops, saying that the fingers of his left hand had gone missing.

According to his initial statement, he was waiting for a friend near Vedant Circle in Surat that night. After an hour, when his friend did not show up, he decided to head home. On the way, he stopped for a brief moment due to a natural urge, after which he felt dizzy and fainted. When he regained consciousness, he noticed that four fingers of his left hand were gone, he claimed.

Tarapara alerted a friend, who took him to a local hospital for treatment. The doctors treated his severed fingers, and he was discharged the same day. Despite police investigations, no blood traces or evidence were found at the location he described, raising questions about his story.

Days later, the Surat Crime Branch uncovered the truth. Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhavesh Rozia said, “Mayur Tarapara admitted to cutting off his own fingers. He purchased a knife and carried out the act in a planned manner”.

Rozia added that Tarapara was under immense pressure at work. He worked as an accountant for a jewellery showroom owned by a relative and was reportedly forced by his father to continue in the role despite him not wanting to.

The investigation, which included analysis of Tarapara’s mobile location data and assistance from forensic experts, confirmed his confession. Tarapara revealed that he first severed three fingers and later cut off the fourth.

When questioned by the media, Tarapara declined to comment, saying, “I don’t know why I did it”. (Agencies )
