Handwara, Oct 06: The third edition of the Girls Premier League was held in Handwara for the first time, with Government Girls Secondary School beating Monarch Secondary School by a single run in a final that went down to the last moments at the District Police Lines ground.
Organised by the Sopore-based Terrific Trio Trust (3T), the tournament featured six teams and was aimed at promoting cricket among girls while giving young players a platform to develop their skills, confidence, leadership and teamwork.
Both sides showed discipline and competitive spirit in the final, but Government Girls Secondary School held their nerve in the closing stages to seal a narrow, memorable win.
ASP Handwara attended the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest, while DySP DAR Handwara Aqeeq-ul-Haq was the Guest of Honour. Police officials, teachers, players, organisers and supporters were also present.
Terrific Trio Trust Chairperson Qurat-ul-Ain said bringing the league to Handwara was an important step towards encouraging greater participation of girls in sports. Sporting events, she said, play a key role in developing discipline, confidence, leadership and teamwork among young people, and such platforms can inspire more girls to come forward, recognise their potential and pursue their sporting ambitions.
She added that the Trust would continue working to create more opportunities for young talent, particularly girls, by providing platforms where they can compete, learn and grow.
The Trust thanked all six participating teams for their enthusiasm, discipline and sportsmanship, and congratulated Government Girls Secondary School on the win. The organisers also expressed gratitude to the players, coaches, teachers, police officials, volunteers and supporters whose efforts made the tournament possible.
