Amid rising tensions in Kashmir—where divisions are being fueled and hatred is being spread in the name of religion following last week’s deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists—the love, respect, and mutual support among the communities living here for decades remain unshaken. In fact, their bond has only grown stronger, shows trust and faith in one another.
One such example comes from a Sikh family in southern Kashmir, which donated a piece of land to the Muslim community for a graveyard. This gesture has not only been widely praised across Kashmir but has also resolved a long-standing issue between the two communities.
Pushvinder Singh, a resident of Tral, donated a plot of land for the Muslim graveyard and, in return, received another piece of land in exchange.
Speaking to The Web Story/The Varmul Post, he said, “I offered my land to create a six-foot-wide and ninety-foot-long passage so that local residents could easily take their deceased to the graveyard.”
Singh said that he resolved the issue by exchanging land with another landlord to ensure the pathway could be constructed. “I swapped my land and, in return, provided an alternative plot to the other landlord. I allocated this six-foot by ninety-foot passage for our brothers,” he stated.
This act of generosity comes at a critical time when certain groups across the country are spreading hatred and attempting to divide people.
Samad Elahi, reacting to this effort, told The Web Story/The Varmul Post that it not only resolved a long-standing issue but also set a powerful example in contrast to those who spread discord. “This is the real Kashmiriyat—where people of different faiths do not fight but live together with dignity and honor,”** he said.
Elahi emphasized that this act sends a strong message to the enemies of peace who seek to divide Kashmir in the name of religion.
Balwinder Singh expressed his gratitude for the initiative, stating, “Unity among our diverse communities is the essence of our shared humanity; together, we can build a peaceful and prosperous future for all in Kashmir.”
Another resident, Gurpreet Kaur, highlighted the importance of interfaith collaboration.
Speaking to The Web Story/The Varmul Post, she said, “At the heart of Kashmir, acceptance and understanding are the true pillars of strength that will overcome any attempt to sow discord among us.”
Pertinently, the Pahalgam attack has sparked a political storm across the country, targeting different sections of society. However, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have stood firm, sending a clear message that they reject violence. Not only have they condemned the terrorists’ cowardly acts, but they have also vowed not to let such elements tarnish their image.
With life returning to normal in Pahalgam after the deadliest attack, visitors are sending a resounding message: “We Indians will not allow those who tarnish our country’s image to succeed. We will not be intimidated by cowardly acts and will continue to visit this place.”
“This is our India, and we will keep coming here, staying with the locals,”they affirm.
This trust stems from the hospitality of the local people and the robust security provided by the administration.
