Kupwara, Oct 5 : Senior Bhatriya Janta Party (BJP) leader Ravinder Raina on Monday said the era of the Hurriyat calendar is over in Jammu and Kashmir, with people now focused on development and normal life moving ahead, while accusing the National Conference of failing to fulfil its poll promises.
BJP leader, who was on a visit to Kupwara district in north Kashmir, said students are busy in universities, colleges and schools, and the people of the Union Territory have turned their attention to their own progress.
The era of the Hurriyat calendar is over. People are now focused on their respective developments, students are busy in universities, colleges and schools, and normal life is moving ahead, he told reporters as per The Web Story/The Varmul Post.
Taking a dig at the NC, he said the party has failed to deliver on several promises made in its election manifesto.
Raina, however, reiterated that the BJP remains committed to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
On the delay in restoring statehood, he said security concerns and other reasons were behind it, expressing hope that it would be restored at the appropriate time.
Notably, The recently held autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed a fresh resolution urging the Union Government to restore full statehood, moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on September 25 and passed on September 28, 2026. The controversy stems from its preamble referencing two earlier resolutions—June 26, 2000 (seeking pre-1953 autonomy) and November 6, 2024 (seeking special status). While the NC calls it a reaffirmation of its historical position, the BJP walked out, with Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma stating the party is not against statehood but opposes linking it to autonomy and Article 35A, calling those references “anti-national.” Omar countered that the core demand is simple—restoring J&K’s pre-reorganisation constitutional status—and accused the BJP of using the autonomy reference as a pretext to avoid voting for statehood.
