Srinagar, Oct 28: Hurriyat Chairman and Chief Cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday said that the “Kashmir issue” is a political problem and could only be resolved through a meaningful dialogue.

“I have often said from the Jamia Mosque that the issue could only be resolved through a meaningful dialogue”, Mirwaiz told media persons in Srinagar on Monday.

The Chief Cleric said a peaceful solution to the “Kashmir issue” should be found through dialogue.

He said there are two sides to the “Kashmir issue”. One is concerned with daily civil life issues including the construction of roads, electricity, water, and jobs and the second dimension is a political problem.

“We often say the Kashmir problem is a political issue and needs to be resolved through a fair and peaceful settlement by holding a dialogue”, the Hurriyat Chairman said.

In reply to a question, Mirwiaz said “We are gradually trying to move forward and are making our efforts so that an ultimate solution could be found to the Kashmir issue”. Adding “What much through the platform of Hurriyat is possible to find a peaceful solution will be provided”, he added.

Regarding the recent meeting with his party colleagues, Mirwaiz said “We met after more than five years and there are so many of our colleagues in jails and hope the government will make efforts for their release”.

On October 24 Hurriyat leaders of the moderate faction led by Chairman Mirwaiz Umar met for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, prompting a surprise in the Kashmir valley. Mirwaiz said that the meeting was informal.

Mirwaiz posted a video of meeting his colleagues, including senior members Abdul Gani Bhat and Bilal Lone, on social networking site X. (Agencies)
