Phagwara, Mar 7 : The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Saturday asserted that Kashmir was, is, and will always remain an integral and proud part of India.
Addressing the Rotary International District 3070 Annual Conference 2026 here, the LG described Kashmir as the “crown of India,” emphasizing that it is not merely a geographical entity but a profound symbol of the nation’s civilisation, spirituality, and resilience.
“Kashmir holds an emotional place in the hearts of all Indians. Its culture, traditions, and history are deeply connected with the idea of India,” Mr. Gupta stated, speaking on the theme “Kashmir – Harmony with Mainstream India.”
Highlighting the transformative impact of the central government’s decision on August 5, 2019, the LG said the abrogation of Article 370 marked a watershed moment for Jammu and Kashmir. He credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring that the same constitutional rights and legal protections available to all Indians are now fully applicable to the people of the region.
“This historic step has ushered in a new era of opportunity, empowerment, and development. Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, are now moving ahead with renewed confidence,” he said.
The LG pointed to major infrastructure projects such as the Zojila Tunnel and Z-Morh Tunnel as key initiatives that are improving connectivity, transforming seasonal routes into all-weather lifelines, and bringing remote areas closer to the national mainstream. He also noted the expansion of educational and healthcare infrastructure, including new medical colleges, IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS, which are enabling local youth to access quality opportunities closer to home.
Mr. Gupta further highlighted that the successful hosting of a G20 meeting in Srinagar symbolized the region’s growing confidence and global visibility, while record tourist footfall reflects a renewed faith in the region’s peaceful environment.
Drawing on his experience as LG of Ladakh since July 2025, he praised the resilience of its people and noted the significant progress made in solar energy, sustainable tourism, and entrepreneurship since the region attained Union Territory status.
Clarifying the concept of national integration, the LG emphasized that harmony with the national mainstream does not mean a loss of identity. “India’s strength lies in its diversity, where languages, traditions, and cultures flourish while remaining united. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Ladakh to Lakshadweep, India stands united, strong, and indivisible,” he affirmed, invoking the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
Later, the Lieutenant Governor was presented the ‘Rotary World Changemaker Award’ by District Governor Rohit Oberoi and RI Director Gurjeet Singh Sheiko for his outstanding public service and contributions towards development, good governance, and nation-building.
