Islamic Studies Professor Publishes with Prestigious Peter Lang

Srinagar, Mar 24 : In a landmark achievement for academia in the region, Dr. Tauseef Ahmad Parray, an Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal, has authored a book published by Peter Lang, a globally renowned academic publisher.

Titled Perspectives on Interpreting Islam in the Contemporary Indo-Pak Subcontinent: Issues and Trends, the work marks Dr. Parray as the first scholar from Kashmir to be published by the prestigious international house.

As per details available with The Web Story/Ths Varmul Post, Spanning 260 pages, the book offers a critical examination of Islamic intellectual traditions in the Indo-Pak subcontinent, analyzing 21st-century trends, challenges, and reformist thought through the contributions of prominent scholars. It explores themes ranging from Quranic hermeneutics and prophetic biography (Seerah) to socio-political discourse and gender dynamics, drawing on insights from figures like Abdur Raheem Kidwai, Yasin Mazhar Siddiqui, and Maulana Wahiduddin Khan.

Dr. Parray, who joined Jammu and Kashmir’s Higher Education Department in 2016, is no stranger to scholarly acclaim. Hailing from Pulwama’s Tral area, he has authored eight books and numerous journal articles, with prior works published by Oxford University Press, including Islam and Democracy in the 21st Century. His expertise spans Islamic political thought, modernity, and Quranic studies.

Meanwhile, The book has garnered praise from leading international scholars. Professor Carool Kersten of KU Leuven, Belgium, hailed it as “a valuable resource on contemporary Islamic intellectual history,” while Dr. Abdul Kader Choughley (Ahsan Academy of Research, South Africa) commended its role in mapping the subcontinent’s Islamic scholarly legacy. Professor Asma Afsaruddin of Indiana University, who penned the foreword, lauded the work for addressing “critically vital topics” in modern Islamic discourse.

Nandini Ganguli, Acquisitions Editor at Peter Lang India, emphasized the book’s relevance: “Dr. Parray’s insightful analysis bridges academia and real-world challenges, making it indispensable for students of Islamic and South Asian Studies.”
