Two people, including a policeman, have been arrested for allegedly locking up and attempting to rape an 82-year-old beggar.
The accused, Lalu, a policeman from Vattiyoorkavu station in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, and his friend, Sajin, were arrested following the incident, which took place at Poovachal in Kattakada around 11 am on Sunday.
The elderly woman, who was begging in the area, was reportedly lured inside the house under the pretext of being given Rs 20. The room was then locked. Her screams, as she tried to escape, alerted locals who came to her rescue and freed her from the accused. It is alleged that the accused were drunk.
Following a medical examination, the police took the elderly woman, a native of Thiruvananthapuram who lives by begging, to her home.
A case will be registered based on her statement. The police have stated that steps are underway to formally charge the accused. (Agencies )
