Says illegal mining in mountainous areas poses risks, urges Geology and Mining Department to regulate operations

Srinagar, Oct 28 : Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore S A Raina on Wednesday called for scientific assessment and regulated extraction of minor minerals in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, warning that unsafe mining practices could endanger lives.
His remarks came after two persons died when they fell from a boat into the river during sand extraction in the Dachanpara area of Rafiabad in Baramulla district during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.
Speaking to The Web Story/The Varmul Post, ADC Raina said he had earlier visited the area where illegal extraction was taking place and submitted a report to the authorities.
He said the area comprised forest land as well as private property, including gardens, and called for a proper assessment of the mineral resources available there.
“How can we stop illegal extraction and utilise these minor minerals? Ultimately, they are an asset for us and should be used in a way that generates revenue and meets public requirements,” Raina said.
The ADC said the Geology and Mining Department should take the lead in scientifically assessing the site and devising a plan for safe and regulated extraction.
He said the administration had already taken up the matter with the department and sent reminders, adding that the issue would be raised again to ensure appropriate action.
ADC Raina cautioned people against extracting minerals without proper authorisation, particularly in mountainous areas where loose material and the terrain could create dangerous conditions.
“You should not extract it illegally because you are putting your life at risk. If proper permission is obtained and the mineral is explored scientifically, extraction can be carried out safely,” he said.
He said the site required technical assessment before extraction could be undertaken in a regulated manner, adding that such an approach would also ensure the payment of applicable royalty to the government.
ADC Raina expressed hope that the administration and the Geology and Mining Department would take appropriate measures to address the issue and prevent further loss of lives.
