Srinagar, Oct 17: National Conference MLA from Sonawari, Hilal Akbar Lone, stated that he had no intention of insulting the Constitution of India or the National Anthem. He explained that he developed a cramp while the anthem was being played, which is why he sat down briefly before getting back up.
In an interview with The Web Story/The Varmul Post, MLA Lone asserted that the National Anthem is compatible with the Constitution of India and emphasized that he did not intend to show disrespect. He mentioned that his back pain was the reason he was unable to sit properly in his chair.
Lone stated that a friend witnessed the incident, and when he stepped outside, he sat on the ground due to his severe back pain.
He also referred to a Supreme Court observation regarding the National Anthem, noting, “If a person doesn’t stand up while it is being played, it is not considered an offense. However, creating a ruckus or causing disruption while it is being played is an offense.”
Meanwhile, Sources said that Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered an investigation into the matter after he was found not standing for the National Anthem.
