Srinagar, Sep 21 : The Jammu and Kashmir government has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) estimated at ₹1,000 crore to tackle traffic congestion in Sopore town and its Fruit Mandi, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary said on Monday, adding that the government was exploring funding options with different agencies, including the Centre.
Replying to questions in the Assembly, Choudhary described the demand for decongesting Sopore as “a very serious issue” and “a very genuine demand”.
He said recommendations had been made by the concerned MLA for road works aimed at easing congestion, while Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar and Baramulla Deputy Commissioner had separately revieved the issue.
“Whether it is Sopore Fruit Mandi or Sopore town, or the other roads, a complete DPR of ₹1,000 crore has been prepared,” Choudhary said.
He said the size of the proposed project meant that the government was discussing the proposal with various agencies and examining how much funding could be provided by the J&K government.
“We are also trying with the Government of India to see whether some projects can be included there, so that the congestion in Sopore city can be removed and the people of Sopore can get relief from this problem of traffic jams,” he said.
Choudhary, however, said the project would take time until the required funding was arranged.
“₹1,000 crore is a very large amount,” he said. “But still, the government will try to do what we want to do for these people. However, for now, it will take time until the amount can be arranged.”
The Deputy Chief Minister also defended the government’s approach to questions raised by opposition members during Question Hour, saying ministers were present in the House with the relevant files and were ready to respond to issues concerning employees and public services.
“Whether it is NHM, daily wagers, NYCs, or any issue related to electricity, water, roads or schools, ministers are sitting here ready to answer each one,” he said.
He alleged that BJP members were unwilling to hear the government’s responses and were in the Assembly primarily to generate news. News
“They have come here to make news, but the people are watching them,” Choudhary said, appealing to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to “see their real face”.
Recent reporting has also documented Choudhary’s comments on employee-related issues, including NHM workers, as the government faces demands over regularisation and service conditions.
The government has previously reviewed proposals involving Sopore’s mandi expansion, road infrastructure, parking facilities and other measures aimed at addressing congestion.
