Three cyclists from north Kashmir town win medals; 32 Rashtriya Rifles sponsors team’s transportation
Srinagar: The girls’ cycling team from Sopore in north Kashmir has brought laurels to the region, with three of its cyclists winning medals at the ASMITA Khelo India UT Women League MTB competition.
The team’s participation was made possible after 32 Rashtriya Rifles sponsored its transportation to the event, officials said.
In the senior category, Ulfat Mushtaq of Buddan won a gold medal (1st position) and a silver medal (2nd position). In the junior category, Sania Ameen of Chinkipora secured a silver medal (2nd position), while Sobia Manzoor of Bomai bagged a bronze medal (3rd position).
Officials attributed the performance to the cyclists’ dedication, determination and hard work. They said the support extended by 32 RR in facilitating transportation enabled the athletes to compete at the UT-level event and showcase their talent.
The results, they added, highlight the sporting potential of young women in the region and underscore the need for continued support and opportunities for emerging athletes.
Situated in Baramulla district, Sopore has in recent years seen a growing interest in cycling among young women, though lack of infrastructure and access to competitions remain key challenges.
