MLA promises to address 70% demands within year

SOPORE, Oct 19: The business community of Sopore submitted a comprehensive memorandum to the newly elected MLA, Irshad Rasool Kar, highlighting critical issues affecting the region, even as the legislator assured 70% of the grievances will be addressed within a year reported news agency KNO.

The charter of demands was presented to the MLA-elect by the president of adhoc traders federation, who was accompanied by the members of the business community. The delegation highlighted the pressing issues including, infrastructure, healthcare, water supply, tourism and power.

Healthcare and education upgrades

Acknowledging the urgent need to upgrade Sopore’s healthcare facilities, Kar said Sopore Hospital requires significant upgradation, and I will pursue it at the earliest. He mentioned plans to enhance the infrastructure of the nursing college and proposed establishing a polytechnic college to meet the growing educational needs of the area.

Removal of barriers and vendor rehabilitation

Addressing the issue of encroachments and footpath vendors, the MLA-elect said that vendors would be rehabilitated under a special package to ensure their livelihood without disrupting public movement.

Tourism development

Kar said Sopore has huge tourism potential. He promised to focus on boosting Rakh-e-Hygam and Wular Lake as prime tourist attractions. “Tourism will be a priority, and we aim to make it flourish,” he said.

Water supply issues

The MLA-elect expressed concern over the inadequate drinking water supply, which currently reaches only 20% of the population. He assured the adhoc traders that the issue would be addressed under the AMRUT scheme, with a special focus on the Dangerpora block. “We will ensure the completion of ongoing water supply projects within six months. Water tankers will also be arranged to meet interim needs,” he assured.

Drainage, community centre and parking solutions

Will work with the Municipal Council to address drainage issues, seeking funding of Rs 8–15 crore for new drainage projects. He promised to review plans for a community centre and ensure that adequate parking spaces are developed near key sites.

Convenience facilities for traders and shoppers

Recognising the daily challenges faced by shopkeepers and shoppers, the Irshad pledged to set up convenience points and ensure drinking water facilities across Sopore’s commercial hubs.

“We are committed to resolving Sopore and Sangrama’s core issues. Within the first year, I aim to address 70% of these problems,” Kar assured reported KNO.
