Jammu, Sep 17 : Two terrorists, believed to be Pakistani nationals owing allegiance to the banned Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), were gunned down in a late-night encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district. The operation is still underway.
The identities of the slain terrorists are yet to be ascertained, officials said.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs about the suspicious movement of individuals, security forces launched a major cordon and search operation in the Sohan area of the district, officials said.
As the cordon was tightened, the hiding terrorists opened indiscriminate fire, triggering a heavy gunbattle with the security forces that continued through the night, they said.
In the early hours of Wednesday, the bodies of the two terrorists—believed to be foreigners and most likely from the Pakistan-based JeM—were recovered from the encounter site, officials said.
Arms and ammunition were also recovered from their possession, they added.
The joint operation was led by the Rashtriya Rifles, along with Para (Special Forces) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
