Baramulla, Nov. 1: Four associates of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit were apprehended by security forces a day after a policeman was killed in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The arrests were made during a joint operation conducted by the Baramulla Police, 52 RR, and 53 CRPF Battalion.
As per the police statement, the incident took place during a routine naka check at the Naradhiri Dangerpora junction on October 30, 2023. The security forces noticed two individuals, identified as Gh Hassan Mir and Mukhtar Ahmad Khan, attempting to flee upon seeing them. However, the joint team tactfully apprehended them. During a search, the security forces recovered a Chinese pistol, a pistol magazine, 12 live rounds, and two hand grenades from their possession.
Following their arrest, a case was registered under various sections, including the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The investigation was initiated by the Sheeri Police Station. As the investigation progressed and based on the information provided by the two arrested individuals, two more persons named Altaf Ahmad Rather and Farooq Ahmad Naqeeb were brought in for questioning. During the interrogation, both Rather and Naqeeb confessed to possessing arms and ammunition. Subsequently, two additional hand grenades were recovered from their possession, leading to their arrest.
It was revealed during the investigation that all four accused individuals were associated with terrorist Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh in the past. Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh, who is currently detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), has been identified as the mastermind behind the activities of these associates. The investigation is ongoing to gather more information and uncover any potential links or networks connected to this incident.
Pertinently, the killing of a policeman at his residence in the Tangmarg area of Baramulla district on Tuesday evening sparked intense anti-militancy operations across the district.
