Baramulla, Oct. 31: A policeman was shot dead by militants in Tangmarg village of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday evening.
An official said that Head Constable Ghulam Mohammed Dar of Wailoo village was shot near his residence.
A police official said that soon after the incident, the victim was rushed to the nearby health facility, where he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the area has been cordoned off, and searches have been launched to nab the attackers.
“Injured police personnel succumbed to their injuries and attained martyrdom. We pay our rich tributes to the martyr and stand by his family at this critical juncture. The area has been cordoned off. Search operation going on,” Kashmir Zone Police posted on X.
The attack comes a day after unidentified militants shot dead a non-local laborer in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday, and just two days after an inspector of the Jammu and Kashmir Police was also shot at by militants while he was playing cricket close to his home in Srinagar on Sunday. As per the last reports, the police officer’s condition was critical.
The series of attacks happened even as the outgoing J&K Police Chief Dilbag Singh recently said that the Union Territory was “on path to lasting peace” and that militancy in Jammu and Kashmir has been “almost finished”. The DGP had said that only 10 local youths had joined militant ranks in 2023, as compared to 110 a year ago.
Interestingly, the DGP had said that north Kashmir, where the cop was killed on Tuesday, was almost free of militancy.
Meanwhile, this attack leaving the whole community in a state of shock, political leaders expressed deep sorrow and condemned the act of valor.
In a tweet, Mehbooba Mufti said that in just a few days, we are seeing an unfortunate rise in targeted killings. I condemn each one of these cowardly acts. My deepest condolences to the family of Ghulam Mohd Dar, who was shot in Tangmarg today.
Apni Party vice president, in a tweet, said Gh Mohd Dar, a police person, got killed at the hands of gunmen. The act is highly condemnable. My condolences to the bereaved. Allah Magfirat Karay. (With Agency Inputs )
