Arsala Shabir from downtown Srinagar is a professional engineer who chose crocheting as her passion by watching her mother around.
Arsala used to watch her mother knitting sweaters, socks for her children and relatives and that’s how she got interested in knitting and crochet making.

“I would always ask my mother to allow me to try hands on knitting. I was a good learner from my childhood and have a very good pickup power. I used to observe things very keenly,” Arsala said.
She told Webstory that during covid it was her last semester exams and she got depressed sitting at home for doing anything.

“During covid, I completed my studies and started preparing for a competitive exam. I qualified for the exam but couldn’t join that. I was jobless and had nothing to do. So, I thought about crocheting and knitting,” she added.
Arsala bought some yarn and made booties first and got a very good response from her friends and family.
“Soon I started getting some customized orders and it worked well. I got orders from out of Kashmir also,” she said.

Arsala also started imparting training to others through online mode and has 2 batches of youth attending her classes
She feels happy that the new generation is taking it as a hobby
“It’s a source of peace and solace for mind and soul,” she added.

She has several plans for the young generation and wants everyone to learn the art so that they can get rid of depression and unemployment.
