Srinagar, May 16 : Following the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan after a period of heightened tensions—marked by war-like situations, cross-border shelling, missile strikes, and bombardments that killed around 30 civilians, injured many, and caused widespread property damage—Kashmir’s prominent cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has appealed to both nations to adopt a lifelong ceasefire for the peace and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir’s people.
Addressing Friday’s congregational prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, Mirwaiz as per The Web Story/The Varmul Post emphasized that both countries should extend the ceasefire indefinitely to ensure lasting peace.
He highlighted how recent cross-border shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) had victimized countless families and caused destruction in multiple districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Kashmir may be a territorial dispute for India and Pakistan, but not for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mirwaiz stated. “Nobody considers our suffering, nobody asks what we want. We live in constant uncertainty, never knowing what will happen next.”
The renowned cleric questioned whether the two nations truly desired peace or were merely focused on demonstrating military dominance. He stressed that the people of Jammu and Kashmir seek lasting peace and a permanent resolution to the conflict.
Mirwaiz also lamented how those advocating for peace are often branded as anti-national, while those promoting war are celebrated as patriots.
