Sopore Teenager Wins International Award for Innovation and Empowerment with Zoonigia

WS/VP Correspondent

Sopore, May 16 : Sopore, a town in north Kashmir, has often made headlines for conflict in the past. However, with changing times, mindsets have shifted toward innovation and creativity, transforming the ground reality in the region. The younger generation continues to script success stories, bringing pride to the Sopore belt.

Amid this transformation, a different kind of narrative is unfolding—one of innovation, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the potential of young minds. Salik Riyaz, a young student from Sopore, has gained international recognition after winning the prestigious Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the World Leaders Summit at the University of Oxford for his groundbreaking initiative, Zoonigia.

Salik never sought the spotlight, but his relentless pursuit of ideas led to the creation of Zoonigia—an initiative aimed at revolutionizing how learners engage with frontier sciences, technology, and creativity, especially in underprivileged regions. What began as a small idea has now blossomed into a vibrant movement. Through hands-on workshops, innovative projects, and global collaborations, Zoonigia empowers students to dream beyond the confines of textbooks. From astronomy to artificial intelligence, Salik’s initiatives bridge ancient knowledge with cutting-edge science, inspiring hundreds to explore uncharted possibilities.

Speaking to The Web Story/The Varmul Post, Salik shared his journey: “My journey was far from smooth. I faced skepticism and ridicule from those who dismissed my ambitions as ‘impractical’ or urged me to pursue a ‘safe career.’ My hyponasal voice, a result of a nasal ailment, even became a target for mockery. Nearly everyone around me tried to hold me back, but I chose to fight harder and rise. Opportunities were scarce, resources were limited, and at times, even finding a platform to share my ideas proved difficult. Yet, I persisted, driven by my belief that this region had untapped potential, talent, and stories the world needed to hear. My dedication led me to explore diverse fields—from philosophy and astronomy to artificial intelligence and grassroots innovation.”

Salik added, “My efforts have not gone unnoticed. I’ve collaborated with global space research programs, including the IASC Pan-STARRS initiative in partnership with NASA, and have empowered hundreds of students to think beyond conventional education. Today, the Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award stands as a testament to my resilience and visionary leadership. This international recognition not only honors my perseverance but also serves as an inspiration, proving what can be achieved when one refuses to give up.”

“But this milestone is just the beginning,” he emphasized. “Zoonigia was never about me—it’s about the individuals who will build, explore, and dream of the world we’re yet to see.”
