Prayer Leaders Sing Anthem, Markets Fly Flags – How J&K Is Rewriting Its Relationship With India

Srinagar, August 09 : Following the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, a fresh wave of national pride has swept through the Union Territory, with both the young and old embracing the display of the national flag and anthem without fear.

Previously hesitant due to concerns of reprisal from anti-national elements, Kashmiri youth are now experiencing a liberated environment. They are openly hoisting the Tricolour atop their homes, in markets, and at public events. The national anthem has become a common feature in schools and gatherings, sung with enthusiasm rather than under duress.

Under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to bolster the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ movement by proudly flying the flag at their homes. Aligning with other states and Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed extensive Independence Day preparations in recent years, including schoolchildren participating in Tricolour rallies.

In districts like Bandipora, Baramulla, Pulwama, Budgam, and Ganderbal, schoolgirls marched with the Tricolour, chanting ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ slogans, showcasing their love for the national flag.

The transformation is striking—where national flags were once a rare sight, they now adorn markets, rooftops, schools, colleges, and offices across Jammu and Kashmir, symbolizing a collective embrace of national unity.

Mohammad Afzal, a prayer leader, told The Web Story /The Varmul Post that the national anthem is now sung with love and dignity. “Though initially met with reluctance, people now wholeheartedly embrace it,” he said. The anthem resonates across the Union Territory—in schools, colleges, and even private events—a testament to growing patriotism.

Touseef Raina, a social activist, noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has effectively curbed stone-pelting and forced shutdowns. “For the first time in decades, schools operate without separatist-enforced hartals, businesses thrive, and respect for national symbols is rising,” he said.

As the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga campaign begins (August 2–15), the Jammu and Kashmir administration has laid meticulous plans for its success.

For days, rallies brimming with patriotism, love, and respect for the national flag have swept across Kashmir—from remote villages to bustling towns and cities. The Tricolor flies high everywhere, symbolizing a renewed sense of unity.

Masrat Rasool Kar former MC President Sopore who, years ago led its first-ever Tiranga rally in town since then the Sopore has matched the enthusiasm of other states with immense pride.

Speaking to The Web Story/The Varmul Post she said that this isn’t just about event; it’s about love for the country and such events proves that Kashmiris are true patriots who will safeguard peace and harmony.
