Srinagar, Aug 30: In an era when a woman’s voice was often kept private in Kashmir, Raj Begum’s became the soul of the region. Her journey—from singing at intimate wedding gatherings to receiving the national honor of the Padma Shri—is now set to inspire a global audience.
Prime Video premiered the musical drama Songs of Paradise exclusively on its platform on Friday.
The production house revealed that the film, inspired by the life of the legendary Kashmiri singer, is more than a biopic; it is a symphony of resilience, hope, and cultural defiance. They stated that the film promises to transport viewers to the breathtaking valleys of Kashmir through a narrative woven with the music that once carried the aspirations of its people.
The project is a collaborative effort from Excel Entertainment, Apple Tree Pictures Production, and Renzu Films. It is helmed by acclaimed director Danish Renzu (Half Widow, The Illegal), who brings a deeply personal vision to the project.
“This film is a tribute to a true pioneer,” Renzu stated. “It tells an emotionally stirring story inspired by [Raj Begum’s] music, legacy, and grit during a time when societal restrictions bound women within both emotional and cultural confines. It is the story of a woman who dared to dream when dreaming itself was an unspoken taboo.”
Actresses Saba Azad and Soni Razdan portray the lead character, Noor Begum, across different epochs of her life. They are supported by a powerful ensemble cast including Zain Khan Durrani, Sheeba Chaddha, Taaruk Raina, and Lillete Dubey.

Notably, Raj Begum’s own story is one of groundbreaking achievement. Encouraged by her father, she joined Radio Kashmir in 1954. For over three decades, her uninhibited, melodious voice provided the soundtrack to a generation, making her Kashmir’s first prominent female playback singer.
More than mere entertainment, her music—celebrated for its heartfelt authenticity—became a potent symbol of freedom and cultural identity for Kashmiri women at a time when such recognition was a distant dream for many due to the region’s societal constraints.
Her illustrious career was recognized with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2013), the State Award from the Jammu and Kashmir government (2009), and India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri, in 2002. She passed away in 2016, but her voice and spirit endure.
Meanwhile, the recently released songs from the film have taken the internet by storm, earning widespread praise from audiences especially across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Since yesterday, the music has been trending on various social media platforms, especially Instagram, where users have widely shared it, hailing the tracks as a tribute to the legendary singer Raj Begum.
The public has also praised and honored the debutant, young and supremely talented Kashmiri singer Masrat Un Nisa. Her voice has become an instant hit online since the release of the songs she performed.
