Srinagar, November 22 : Deputy Commissioner of Labour, Najwan Nazki affirmed that the newly introduced Four Labour Codes are poised to significantly enhance worker welfare by establishing universal minimum wages, ensuring gender equality, and guaranteeing timely wage payments.
Nazki as per The Web Story/The Varmul Post stated that the central government has consolidated 29 existing labour laws into four comprehensive codes: the Code on Wages, 2019; the Industrial Relations Code, 2020; the Code on Social Security, 2020; and the Occupational Safety, Health, and Working Conditions Code, 2020.
She outlined that these codes introduce landmark reforms, including the provision for fixed-term employment, which offers greater flexibility and formalizes short-term contracts. A key feature is the implementation of a uniform definition of ‘wages’ across all legislation, ensuring consistency in the calculation of benefits and entitlements.
Furthermore, the updated regulations introduce new provisions, such as permitting overtime work in specific industries, adapting to modern operational requirements while safeguarding employee rights.
Pertinently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi heralded the move on social media platform X, stating, “Shramev Jayate! our Government has given effect to the Four Labour Codes. It is one of the most comprehensive and progressive labour-oriented reforms since Independence.”
He emphasized that the reforms greatly empower workers while simplifying compliance to promote ‘Ease of Doing Business.’ The Prime Minister added that the codes will create “a strong foundation for universal social security, minimum and timely payment of wages, safe workplaces and remunerative opportunities,” and will play a crucial role in accelerating India’s journey towards a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).
