Srinagar, Oct 03: Senior CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Saturday expressed concern over rising plastic pollution and the shrinking of major water bodies, including Dal Lake and the River Jhelum, and called for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations along with greater public participation in conservation efforts.
Speaking at an environmental awareness programme in Achabal, Tarigami as per The Web Story/The Varmul Post said environmental protection is a collective responsibility and cannot be left to the government alone. He stressed the need for effective official action and active community involvement to check ecological degradation.
“The shrinking of Dal Lake and the River Jhelum is a matter of serious concern. Plastic pollution is choking our water bodies and our future. This cannot be reversed by the government alone,” he said.
The event was also attended by party leaders Abdul Majeed Larmi and Riyaz Ahmad Khan. Students present at the programme took a pledge to protect the environment.
Tarigami’s remarks come amid mounting concerns over the deteriorating health of Kashmir’s water bodies, with experts repeatedly flagging pollution, encroachment and reduced water inflow as major threats to the region’s fragile ecosystem.
