Single Mother’s “Kinaaz” Becomes Kashmiri Fashion Powerhouse, Employs 20.

SOPORE, JAN 10 : Summer Khan, a single mother of three daughters, has built a successful fashion business while challenging societal norms in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
In an Interview with Kashmir Convener, Summer reflected on her motivation. “I want to set an example for my daughters to show them that a woman is not weak, she can achieve anything with the support of her family,” she said.
“Alhamdulillah,” she added, “I have received tremendous support from my family, my children, and my friends, who have been instrumental in helping me realize my dreams.”
“It was not easy it was filled with obstacles. But with willpower, you can turn the page and prove others wrong, especially when you are determined to contribute to your society and family,” she said.
What began as a struggle has now transformed into societal support. “Initially, it was very tough. But today, everyone supports me. It ultimately depends on the individual. Sincere hard work truly pays off and allows you to shine,” Summer said.
“As a mother, I strive to show my children through practice that nothing is impossible. Girls are capable of achieving as much as boys, if not more. My children have been incredibly supportive, encouraging me to fight for my dreams,” she shared.
Five years ago, Summer opened her clothing outlet, Kinaaz, in Sopore town. Today, it is not merely an outlet but a premier fashion design hub, employing 20 individuals and celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship.
Summer, a double graduate with a B.Sc., M.Ed., and B.Ed., chose entrepreneurship over a government career. “I always aspired to step out as an entrepreneur. I never sought a government job. Today, I am fulfilling that dream of serving society through enterprise,” she stated.
“There were moments I felt like giving up. I experienced deep trauma when my personal life was affected and even reached a point where I attempted to end my life,” Summer revealed. “But the thought of my parents and children ‘I cannot do injustice to them; what would my children do without me?’ compelled me to move forward. I was driven to do what makes my children happy and to prove that women are not weak.”
“In our society, girls and women often see their freedoms restricted, but rights and equality belong to everyone. Women’s empowerment gains true value when it aims to strengthen the family,” she asserted. “There is no longer space for women to be dependent; it is essential for us to stand on our own feet.”
Kinaaz specializes in handicrafts, handmade machine tilla work, Aari stitching, and custom designs tailored to client preferences.
Reflecting on her business ethos, Khan said, “When I started the boutique, it was not easy. I faced numerous challenges, but my focus remained clear to deliver quality work. Alhamdulillah, this commitment has been key to the growth and sustainability of Kinaaz.”
“My goal is straightforward: to offer the highest quality service. Customer satisfaction is what has fueled Kinaaz’s expansion, attracting clients not only from Sopore but also from Anantnag, Srinagar, central Kashmir, and beyond,” she explained, adding that she also organizes an annual exhibition.
Summer said, “Do not merely wait for government jobs. Pursue work that aligns with your passion, but do so with honesty and dedication. That is the path to growth and prosperity. Business is a viable path. Pursue it with integrity, and it will not fail you; it will reward and shape you.”
