Ashiq Hussain, a resident of Srinagar, has revolutionized vegetable cultivation by successfully growing them in PVC pipes, even without the need for conventional land. His incredible idea has caught the attention of many aspiring home gardeners, inspiring them to grow their own produce within the confines of their houses or verandas.
In an interview with The Web Story, Ashiq said that he initially doubted the success of his experiment. However, to his delight, the seeds he planted started flourishing within a few days. He emphasized that this hydroponic system can be implemented anywhere, be it a room or a terrace, as long as there is access to sufficient solar light through a window.
Ashiq said that certain components are required, including PVC pipes, a 10-watt motor, and, most importantly, a reliable electricity supply. He said those without access to land must give this method a try, as they too can achieve the same level of success.
Ashiq also emphasized the versatility of this method, stating that a wide range of vegetable varieties can be cultivated using this innovative approach.
Hydroponics, the method Ashiq employed, is a soil-less cultivation technique where plants derive all necessary nutrients from a water solution medium. The presence of soil becomes unnecessary for their survival.
The circulating nutrient solution, powered by a motor attached to the PVC pipes, ensures optimal growth and eliminates the risk of disease. Therefore, individuals without access to land can now leverage this technology to cultivate vegetables from the comfort of their own homes.
Permanently, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has recognized the potential of this groundbreaking technology and officially introduced it as a means for residents to grow vegetables in PVC pipes.
