SRINAGAR, Jan. 19 – Cold conditions tightened their grip across Kashmir as minimum temperatures dropped, with the meteorological department forecasting spells of wet weather, especially in the higher reaches of the valley, over the next several days.
A senior official from the Meteorological Department informed the The Web Story/The Varmul Post that fresh spells of rain and snowfall are expected across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh beginning January 19, as two western disturbances approach the region in quick succession.
The official stated that light to moderate rain or snow is likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from January 19 to 21, to be followed by more widespread precipitation between January 22 and 24.
Isolated heavy snowfall has been forecast for Kashmir, Ladakh, and the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh on January 23.
The official further noted that Jammu and Kashmir continue to face harsh winter conditions, with temperatures remaining extremely low across the Union Territory. Several areas, especially in the Kashmir Valley, recorded sub-zero nighttime temperatures.
The intense cold has disrupted daily life, characterized by freezing mornings and limited outdoor activity.
Notably, the ongoing Chillai Kalan—the coldest 40-day winter phase—has kept the Kashmir Valley firmly under an icy spell. During this period, water bodies partially freeze, heating demand rises sharply, and residents rely heavily on traditional heating methods as cold winds and a biting chill persist day and night.
