Baramulla, Nov. 14: The old city of Baramulla in the northern region, also known as Shehr-e-Khaas, is a treasure trove of history, art, and culture.
Arawat Mehraj, a resident of the old town, told The Web Story that the town is a vibrant one with its bustling bazaars and rich heritage and has long been considered the gateway to Kashmir.
He said this town is situated alongside the Jhelum River and is surrounded by majestic mountains. The town offers a picturesque backdrop for its historical landmarks.
Arawat further said that Baramulla town is home to five bridges that seamlessly connect the civil lines with the old town areas, which enhances the town’s charm.
He further said that each corner of Shehr-e-Khaas holds its own unique specialty, showcasing the town’s diverse demographics. From the aromatic Baker Khawani and delicious Kulchas to hot and crispy snacks, every lane in old Baramulla is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Arawat further added.
Haji Saheer, a prayer leader, said in conversation with The Web Story that the town’s cultural and historical significance is evident through landmarks such as the Dargah e Aaliya, which houses sacred relics of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and the Jamia Masjid.
He said the historic Eid Gah Qadeem and Jamia Masjid further enrich the spiritual significance of the old town. The 12th-century Jamia Masjid, with its Persian design, is a testament to Baramulla’s architectural splendor.
Haji further said that in addition to its Muslim heritage, the old town of Baramulla also houses Chahti Paddhashi, a revered Gurudwara that caters to the Sikh community. This exemplifies the region’s deep-rooted spirit of religious harmony and diversity.
The shops in the lanes and bylanes of the old town invite visitors to indulge in a culinary journey, savoring the flavors of Rooth, Nadir Monje, and various mouthwatering street foods.
Farooq Mir, a local businessman, told The Web Story that the old town of Baramulla has a historical legacy of trade and cultural heritage, serving as a bustling business center and a primary gateway for trade between Kashmir and the rest of the world.However, it is unfortunate that the present state of the area has led to neglect and has made it a less prominent part of Kashmir he added.
The old town of Baramulla is a place where the echoes of history can be heard among aged residences and where people gather at windows to share their joys and sorrows.
