In light of the arrival of winter in the Kashmir valley, health experts are urging elderly individuals to exercise caution and take necessary precautions when venturing outdoors during the morning and evening hours.
Doctors sua that with temperatures dropping significantly, the vulnerable elderly population must prioritize their health and safety.
A doctor at GMC Baramulla told Webstory that the weather conditions should not be taken lightly, as they can exacerbate existing medical conditions and pose a higher risk of respiratory infections and other health issues in senior citizens.
Dr. Farhan Ahmed, a prominent pulmonologist, emphasized the importance of preventive measures for elderly individuals.
“Elderly people are more prone to cold-related illnesses and complications. It is crucial for them to adhere to precautionary measures to protect themselves from the upcoming harsh winter conditions,” he reiterated.
Meanwhile, keeping the harsh weather conditions in consideration, the health experts have shared a series of recommendations aimed at safeguarding the elderly during their outdoor activities throughout the winter season.
- Layered Clothing: Wearing multiple layers of clothing is essential to trap body heat and provide insulation. It is advised that the elderly wear thermal clothing underneath a warm sweater or jacket. Wearing scarves, gloves, and hats is also crucial to protect exposed areas from the cold.
- Proper Footwear: Wearing proper footwear, such as insulated boots with good traction, is vital to prevent slips and falls on icy surfaces. Additionally, thermal socks can provide extra warmth and comfort.
- Staying Hydrated: Elderly individuals should maintain proper hydration levels even during the winter months. Although the perception of thirst decreases in cold weather, it is important to consume an adequate amount of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Limiting Outdoor Exposure: Health professionals advise restricting outdoor activities during extremely cold weather, especially during early mornings and evenings when temperatures tend to be the lowest. It is recommended to schedule errands and social activities during the middle hours of the day when temperatures are relatively higher.
- Protect the Respiratory System: Covering the mouth and nose with a scarf or mask can help protect the respiratory system from the cold air, reducing the risk of respiratory infections and triggering of respiratory conditions.
Dr. Farhan also stressed the importance of regular medical check-ups for the elderly during the winter season.
He urged family members and caregivers to ensure that their elderly loved ones have access to appropriate healthcare and medications, especially for conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
