Srinagar, 11 : In Kashmir, where women have long held their ground, from ancient spiritualists and poets to influential leaders, a group of 12 girls from central Kashmir’s Srinagar district has embarked on a unique venture. They have taken the bold step of establishing an exclusive female canteen at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, breaking stereotypes and transforming their traditional business.
Hailing from the fishing community, these young girls aspire to transition into the modern era, not only securing their livelihood but also competing in various spheres of life.
Rumina Ahad, one of the girls in the group, in a chat with The Web Story that witnessing the lack of respect their mothers endured inspired them to challenge societal prejudices and stereotypes that belittle their capabilities.
She said that through the NRLM (National Rural Livelihood Mission), she and her colleagues pursued courses in hotel management, specializing in fish, chicken, and millet preparations.
She said their skills were put to the test during the International G-20 Summit, where they served delegates, which earned them praise from the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar.
Building upon this success, the NRLM granted them the noteworthy opportunity to run an exclusive female canteen, an achievement for which they express their utmost gratitude towards DC Srinagar.
Rumina said that currently, they have a team of 12 girls who handle food preparation and service at the DC office canteen, while also fostering a warm and home-like atmosphere.
Rumina shares an inspiring message, emphasizing that finding happiness and fulfillment extends beyond the pursuit of government jobs.
She said anyone can experience joy by dedicating themselves wholeheartedly to any work, driven by passion and diligence.
She said that girls are capable of accomplishing wonders in any business, asserting that it is imperative for them to step forward fearlessly.
She said it’s time to overcome obstacles, achieve their goals, and invite others to follow suit, reminding them that they too can turn their aspirations into reality.
She made a bold appeal to girls and said, “Seize the moment, waste no time, and unleash your full potential to create wonders that leave a lasting impact.”
