A baby was successfully delivered at a government hospital in Keran, Kupwara in northern India using techniques reminiscent of the Bollywood movie “3 Idiots.”
Due to heavy snowfall, it was not possible to transport the mother to a nearby hospital, so doctors coordinated over a WhatsApp video call to guide medical staff on the ground in delivering the baby.
The woman from Mandian, Keran, was taken to a nearby primary health center after complaining of labor pains. However, due to the road being blocked by snow, it was not possible to transport her to the Sub District Hospital in Kupwara.
Block Medical Officer Dr. Mir Mad Shafi reached out to the medical staff in Keran and called the gynecologist at the Sub District Hospital on a video call. The gynecologist then guided the on-duty doctor and paramedics to successfully deliver the baby.
Both the mother and baby are reported to be in good health. The priority of the medical staff was to ensure the safety of the patient, and they rose to the challenge despite the difficult conditions posed by the snow.
Dr. Shafi stated that working in remote areas requires courage and dedication, and praised the staff for their successful efforts. The incident serves as a reminder of the dedication and resourcefulness of medical professionals in even the most challenging of circumstances.
