A Traditional Celebration or a Societal Nuisance?

Suhail Khan

In Kashmiri culture, weddings have always been a subject of discussion. Whether it is the extravagant amount of money spent, the incorporation of modern techniques, or the inclusion of a wide range of cuisines in the traditional Wazwaan feast, these weddings never fail to captivate people’s attention. However, the latest trend that seems to be generating both curiosity and concern is the use of firecrackers during the celebrations, which has become a nuisance for the society.

A recent survey conducted by The Web Story team in various districts of Kashmir revealed that the use of firecrackers during marriage ceremonies has caused significant inconvenience for the community, particularly the elderly.

Haji Hakeemulla, a prayer leader in a mosque in Baramulla district, expressed his irritation with this practice. He emphasized that using firecrackers late in the evening is not an appropriate way to express happiness. He highlighted that it negatively impacts children and the elderly, and suggested that marriages should be concluded peacefully without resorting to such practices.

Abdul Satar, a senior citizen, also expressed serious concern about the use of firecrackers during late-night hours. He deemed it a nuisance and advocated for a strict ban on this practice, especially during nighttime celebrations.

Shaista Jan, a student, shared her personal experience of a recent marriage in her area where firecrackers were used. She described the situation as chaotic and revealed that not only did the loud noises affect the children, but two elderly members of her household had to be hospitalized. She stressed the need to consider the well-being of others rather than being solely focused on personal enjoyment.

Tajamul, a cinematographer based in Sopore, strongly condemned the use of firecrackers during marriage ceremonies. He asserted that such a practice should be completely banned, as it contradicts the spirit of happiness and blessings associated with weddings. He argued that ending the celebration on a sad note by disturbing the community and inviting criticism is unnecessary.

The situation in Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, is no different, with firecrackers becoming a common feature in marriage functions.

A senior police officer acknowledged that this mode of celebration not only disrupts the community but also leads to various disturbances. He advised against such practices, which have become a source of irritation for others.
The officer expressed that the police frequently receives calls from societies where such practices are taking place. However, they always advise and urge the community to refrain from engaging in such celebrations, particularly during late hours of the night.

It is evident that the use of firecrackers during Kashmiri marriages has sparked concerns among elders and parents, prompting calls for a ban on this practice.

The community hopes that by curbing such activities, they can foster a peaceful and harmonious environment during marriage celebrations.

But, the question arises as to why society exhibits such a lack of responsibility towards their own community, their own people, especially when it concerns a joyful and auspicious occasion such as this.

It prompts us to question whether we, as individuals, can truly make a positive contribution by being reasonable and responsible citizens. Or are we merely fulfilling our obligations in name only, without taking meaningful action?????
