Ganderbal, Oct 20: The death toll in the Ganderbal terror attack has risen to three, as another injured labourer succumbed to his wounds.
A senior police officer told The Web Story/The Varmul Post that another injured labourer succumbed in Srinagar hospital, bringing the total toll to three.
The officer stated that five labourers sustained critical injuries after militants opened fire on them in the Gagangeer area of Kangan this evening when they were working on a tunnel project.
The victims were promptly evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment; however, two were declared dead on arrival, rest were referred to Srinagar hospital.
The officer further said that the entire area has been sealed off to nab the attackers.
According to local sources, a total of five labourers were injured in the attack, including Gurmeet Singh, son of Dharam Singh, from Punjab, aged about 30 years; Inder Yadav, son of Gareeb Dass, from Bihar, aged 35 years; Mohan Lal, son of Somnath, from Kathua, aged about 29/30 years; Fayaz Ahmad Lone, son of Zahoor Ahmad Lone, from Preng Kangan, aged about 26 years; and Jagtar Singh, son of Surah Singh, from Kathua, aged about 30 years.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack in a post on X, stating, “Very sad news of a dastardly and cowardly attack on non-local labourers at Gagangeer in the Sonamarg region. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. Two have been killed, and two to three more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people and send my condolences to their loved ones,” he said.
In another tweet, Omar stated, “The casualty figure from the Gagangeer attack is not final, as a number of injured labourers, both local and non-local, are still being treated. I pray that the injured make a full recovery as the more seriously injured are being referred to SKIMS, Srinagar,” he said.
