SRINAGAR: The Government Degree College (GDC) Baramulla on Tuesday hosted its annual Media Festival 2025, organised by the Department of Media Studies, bringing together students of films, photography, and creative writing.

The event, held on the college campus, began with the screening of student-made promotional videos, followed by a formal inaugural. Dr Danish Nabi, Head of the Department, welcomed participants, and the Principal of GDC Baramulla delivered the inaugural address.

“In the age of digital transformation, media education is not just about producing content but shaping thought, sparking dialogue, and building responsible storytellers. I am proud of the Department of Media Studies for creating such a vibrant platform for our students,” said the Principal of the college.

The festival featured several creative segments, including student project screenings, a photography competition, and a photo exhibition. The post-lunch session included an open theatre performance and a film competition judged by filmmaker Ronaq Zahoor.

“I was genuinely impressed by the originality and depth displayed in the student films. It’s encouraging to see young minds tackling complex themes with such maturity,” said Zahoor.

Winners were announced in four categories. In Feature Writing, Silent Stitches by Aafreen Bashir and Hafsa Hamid (GDC Baramulla) secured first place. In Photography, Ishfaq Rashid Bhat (Central University of Kashmir, Ganderbal) won first place. In Photo Essay, Me and What I See by Sheikh Anam (GDC Baramulla) stood first. In the category of Film, Beneath the Surface: Kashmir’s Silent Crises by Hanan Javed (IGNOU) bagged the top award.

The Valedictory Session featured an Open Mic, prize distribution, and a Vote of Thanks by Prof Tariq Chalkoo. “Media Festival 2025 wasn’t just an event; it was a reflection of how far our students have come in blending academic learning with creative application,” said Prof. Chalkoo.

Students expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “Winning the photo essay competition was truly fulfilling. The festival allowed us to share stories that matter,” said Sheikh Anam. Another winner, Hafsa Hamid, added, “This festival proved that student voices can be powerful when nurtured.”
