Sopore, Oct 14 : Residents of Sher Colony area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, staged a protest against the Jal Shakti Department, citing a prolonged lack of drinking water in the area.
Reports reaching The Web Story/The Varmul Post said that Sher Colony residents blocked the Taroo-Sopore road to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the government’s inaction regarding the ongoing water crisis.
Protesters claimed that they have been without drinking water for the past 20 days, and no efforts have been made to address their concerns or restore the water supply.
Many expressed their disappointment, noting that the leaders who frequently visited during the election period seem to have forgotten them now.
“Is this what we call relief? Is this what we were promised?” they lamented.
The residents mentioned that just 15 days ago, the Jal Shakti Department assured them that the water supply would be restored. However, that promise has not been fulfilled, leaving them in the same dire situation as before.
Sabreena, a local woman, told The Web Story/The Varmul Post, “We have been without drinking water for a long time and are experiencing extreme hardship. Despite frequent assurances from the department, they have consistently failed to meet our expectations.”
She added that visiting the Jal Shakti Department has become a daily routine for her and others, yet officials rarely pay attention to their concerns.
The protesting residents once again urged the relevant authorities to awaken from their apathy and address their issues so that they may receive relief.
Ironically, when this report was filed, only police were present at the scene, with no official from any civil department coming to listen to the protesting residents.
In response, Mudasir Ahmad, a concerned officer from the Jal Shakti Department in Sopore, stated that a team would visit the site to assess the situation preventing residents from obtaining water. He suggested that a decrease in flow might be the cause, but assured that the matter would be addressed promptly to alleviate the residents’ suffering.
Meanwhile, People in Sopore remain hopeful that the newly elected MLA, Irshad Rasool Kar, will bring positive change, development, peace, and prosperity to the town, resolving the issues faced by residents and fostering growth and well-being in the area.
It remains to be seen whether the MLA will effectively tackle the problems in Sopore or if these issues will persist or worsen.
