In a region where women have traditionally faced barriers to education and economic opportunities, Shazia Jan is breaking new ground as a successful entrepreneur.
The resident of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has established a thriving fish farm, overcoming financial challenges and creating a model for other women to follow.
Jan’s story is just one example of the growing number of Kashmiri women who are finding innovative ways to overcome obstacles and succeed in a variety of fields.
Talking to The Web Story, Shazia said that she has been running a fish farm with her husband for the past eight years
She was motivated to start the business due to the current job crisis and the condition of highly qualified youth.
Shazia had previously participated in various government programs, which brought her attention to the scheme.
She decided to explore the program and discussed it with her husband, who agreed to start their journey eight years ago.
Shazia said that her family consists of three children, and in addition to their father, their mother also assists in running their fish farm.
Shazia emphasized that they live in a situation where it is expected for husbands to provide for their families, but it is also the responsibility of wives to support their families for a better household.
According to her, it is not shameful for individuals to seek assistance in their growth. Comparing their current situation to eight years ago, she expressed pride in the decision to establish the fish farm, which not only transformed their lives but also contributed to their financial advancement.
Shazia asserts that individuals who have stubbornly held onto the belief that women are incapable of achieving anything are deluding themselves. She contends that times have evolved, and women will now take the lead in every field and excel both in entrepreneurship and domestic roles.
Shazia urged people to explore government schemes to find ways to earn a livelihood, instead of staying at home and becoming frustrated. She emphasized that taking action is crucial for a successful future, and doing what suits one’s soul is the key to satisfaction.
