Baramula, July 23 : A culinary tradition known as Wazwan has long been celebrated as an integral part of weddings and festive occasions in Kashmir. However, recent developments in this age-old tradition have slowly become a burden for the poor people who are unable to afford the effort required as per the custom.
With the increasing trend and growing economic circumstances, Wazwan has become a liability for the poor during Kashmiri weddings due to the excessive use of a variety of dishes by other sections of people.
Keeping this trend in mind and considering the distress faced by the poor community, a commendable step has been taken by the Reshipora Bangdara Auqaaf Committee in Baramulla. They have created an awareness in the entire region that each household in the village should use only 4 dishes for a wedding occasion and no household should spend more than 2 lakhs on a wedding.
This step has not only been appreciated but has also created a wave of happiness across the region, and every household has assured that they will adopt this step and set an example for the whole of Kashmir, so that the poor people can breathe a sigh of relief.
Ghulam Mohammad, an elder, while talking to The Web Story/The Varmul Post, said that this step is not only appreciated by the village but should be implemented across the valley, as we are all witnessing how our weddings are becoming a burden on the shoulders of parents, especially the poor, who are being forced to follow the trending practices.
A poor father cannot afford to use 30 to 40 dishes for a wedding, as the financial crisis has gripped the entire Kashmir. Therefore, it is the responsibility of everyone to implement this step and conduct their weddings in a simple and modest manner, where there will be happiness and peace.
Mushtaq Ahmad, a prayer leader, told The Web Story/The Varmul Post that people are going overboard with the Kashmiri Wazwan and the expenses have become excessive, but they are becoming a source of distress for others in their pursuit of happiness.
Mushtaq said that our humor also gets stuck on the excessive expenses, hence, everyone should ensure that they keep a minimum number of dishes at weddings so that even the poor can celebrate their weddings with joy.
