Srinagar, June 15 : Who claims women can’t dominate sports? Who dares to say Kashmiri women lack capability? Who denies their brilliance? Defying all odds, they chase their dreams relentlessly, excelling even in male-dominated fields. Their unwavering resolve is not just inspiring—it’s rewriting history.
Among these champion girls is Sopore’s Nahida Nabi, the first Kashmiri girl to qualify for the Referee Fresher Course organized by the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) in Jaipur, Rajasthan, this May.
Hailing from Seer Sopore, Nahida isn’t just breaking barriers—she’s redefining them. Beyond medals and accolades, she embodies the spirit of the slogan: “Beti Ko Pahalwan Banao” (Make daughters wrestlers). Today, she stands tall as Kashmir’s pride.
Earlier this year, Nahida—Kashmir’s first female wrestler—shared her struggles with The Web Story/The Varmul Post “A woman must battle countless doubts before pursuing such a career.”
Convincing her parents was no easy feat. “They still question my choice,” she admitted. “But my brother has been my rock, supporting me emotionally and financially.”
She credits her success to her family “Without them, I wouldn’t be here. Their belief turned my dreams into reality.”
Nahida is among ten Kashmiris who cleared the AKFI’s rigorous Referee Course Exam. The list, obtained by Kashmir Despatch, includes Arshid Rather, Firdous Rather, Ram Kumar, Rakesh Dubai, Mir Alam, Majid Khan, Nazarat Bhati, Tanveer Iqbal, and Anita Sharma.
